Visit Italy

Hello, I'm Henrietta
I am a daughter of the Eternal City, having lived in Rome for nearly 20 years. The same marble blocks that have stood in place for about two thousand years, witnessing the history of the Eternal City, make Rome one of the most popular travel destinations – the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum are just a few examples of the city's landmarks.

Experience the best of Rome with me. I'll tell you how to skip the long lines at museums and show you the best authentic Italian restaurants and gelato stalls.
I'll help you plan and execute your trip.

I want you to return home with your heart full of good memories. I want you to taste the crispiest pizza you've ever had in a charming trattoria. Rome is more of a feeling than a place. Just one evening in Rome, and your heart will already be in love!

The Best Tips for Rome – 3-Day Guide

If you're planning to spend around three days in Rome, here are the best tips to help you plan your trip.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration of Rome's Historical Sights

Accommodation:
I recommend staying in Ostia, by the sea. This area is peaceful with stunning views, and it's only about a 40-minute train ride to the center of Rome.

Colosseum:
Start your day with a visit to the Colosseum. I recommend arriving early as the area can get crowded. There are two types of tickets: a basic ticket and a more comprehensive one, which gives access to the underground areas.

Roman Forum:
Next to the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, a vast and historically significant area. Be prepared for a long walk—comfortable shoes and a water bottle are a must!

Walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali:
From the Forum, you can continue walking along Via dei Fori Imperiali towards the Altare della Patria, an impressive monument at Piazza Venezia.

Classic Sights:

  • Pantheon: A historical temple famous for its magnificent architecture.

  • Campo de' Fiori: A lively square where you can stop for coffee.

  • Piazza Navona: One of Rome's most beautiful squares, known for its art and fountains.

  • Fontana di Trevi: The iconic fountain where you throw a coin in hopes of returning to Rome.

  • Spanish Steps: End your day here, enjoying the atmosphere and amazing views.

This route gives you a good overview of Rome's historical sights and lets you experience the unique ambiance of the city on your first day.

Day 2: Art and Religious History in the Vatican

Start Early:
The Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica are very popular attractions, so I recommend booking your tickets in advance and arriving early to avoid the crowds and have more time to enjoy the sights.

Vatican Museums:
The museums contain a vast collection of art and historical treasures, so make sure to set aside plenty of time for your visit.

Don't miss the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo's famous ceiling painting with its breathtaking details is located.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle as the museum tour is extensive and can take several hours.

Lunch:
After the museum tour, enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants inside the Vatican or outside in the surrounding area.

St. Peter's Basilica:
After the museum tour, head to St. Peter's Basilica. This immense church is one of the most impressive religious buildings in the world.

Be sure to climb to the top of the dome for spectacular views of Rome—it's definitely worth the effort!

St. Peter's Square:
End your visit by admiring St. Peter's Square, which is especially stunning in the afternoon light. The scale and symmetry of the square are truly impressive.

You can also sit and enjoy the surrounding atmosphere before heading back to your accommodation.

Dinner:
End the day with dinner in Trastevere, a charming neighborhood along the Tiber River. Known for its atmospheric streets and excellent restaurants, I recommend trying a Roman specialty like cacio e pepe pasta. One of my favorite places is Trapizzino. Trastevere is full of cocktail bars and authentic vibes, so it's a great place to stay after dinner.

Day 3: History and Local Charm in Ostia

On your third day, head back to Ostia, where history and a charming atmosphere come together, and fewer tourists venture to visit.

Start the Morning:
Ostia Antica
Ostia Antica is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman port cities. The area is like an open-air museum where you can wander through the ruins and imagine what life was like in ancient Rome.

There's plenty to see: theaters, baths, temples, and ancient streets that will take you back in time.

Again, wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle—this area is vast, and there's much to explore.

Lunch:
Near Ostia Antica, you'll find some charming cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy lunch. Don't eat at the ruins themselves—walk out towards the castle: Castello di Giulio II and Borgo di Ostia Antica.

Castello di Giulio II:
This medieval castle, located right next to Ostia Antica, was built in the 15th century. It's an excellent place to explore the area's history. Don't miss the tower, where you'll have beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

Borgo di Ostia Antica:
Right next to the castle is Borgo, a small and charming village with narrow streets, stone houses, and a local atmosphere. It's the perfect place to relax. I recommend eating at Arianna al Borghetto.

Dinner:
Finish your day with dinner at a seaside restaurant in Ostia, such as Sergio e Serra. Try a frutti di mare dish or other Italian seafood specialties. Don't miss the sunset view from the Pontile.
