 Working with people and acting as a bridge between two cultures is my profession. 

I have been working as an interpreter since 2017 in fields such as healthcare, social services, education, and law enforcement. I started as a freelance interpreter and, after completing my training, I continued to work in the same field as an independent entrepreneur.

Guiding Principles of an Interpreter's Work and Tips for Smoother Collaboration

1. Use of the First Person
   The interpreter always translates using the first person, allowing for direct communication between the parties. This avoids the need to speak to the interpreter with phrases like "Tell him/her that...". Contact can thus be established directly with the person being addressed, while the interpreter handles the translation.

2. Faithfulness to the Content
   The interpreter limits themselves to faithfully translating what is said, without adding or omitting anything. They do not summarize the content independently nor insert personal opinions into the translation.

3. Neutrality
   The interpreter always maintains a neutral attitude and never expresses personal opinions. Their role is to facilitate fair communication between the parties without allowing their own beliefs to influence the translated content. At the beginning of each assignment, the interpreter may clarify their role to avoid misunderstandings.

4. Confidentiality Obligation
   The interpreter is bound by a strict confidentiality obligation. Everything said during the session remains confidential. The interpreter can clarify this principle at the start of the meeting to ensure a calm and secure dialogue. If the interpreter takes notes to aid in translation, these will be securely destroyed at the end of the assignment.

5. Conflict of Interest Declaration
   The interpreter must immediately report any conflicts of interest once they become aware of them. This could involve relationships of kinship, friendship, disputes, or debts. To avoid these situations, it is helpful to communicate the name of the person to be translated at the time of booking. However, if the conflict arises only on-site, the interpreter will report it immediately, and a replacement will be arranged.

6. Adequate Time
   A good rule is to allow double the time when working with an interpreter compared to a meeting without translation. This is because speeches must pass through the interpreter, from one language to another.

7. Simplified Language
   When working with an interpreter, it is helpful to use simple language and explain complex concepts clearly. The interpreter will be able to translate the concept, but the specific term may not be familiar to the client.

8. Short Interventions
   Most of the required interpretation is consecutive, meaning the interpreter and speaker take turns speaking. It is therefore useful to take frequent pauses, to avoid giving the interpreter a lengthy monologue to translate. The interpreter often takes notes to ensure maximum accuracy, but the best results come from short interventions. In the case of long speeches, it may be helpful to take a break to allow for translation before continuing.

9. Clarification of the Role
   The interpreter clarifies their role with new clients and participants at the beginning of the session, so everyone understands that they are present solely to facilitate communication and not to provide assistance or any other functions.
